Dear Diary,

    The following is an account of my personal work with the Girl Guides Anthem. (This journal entry was composed in the weekend after the YouTube upload.)

 

THE SCORE.

** Monday 21 August 2023 **

    This evening, I was visited by John to review some work for school. He showed me some of his scores and I soon came across a handwritten score for the Girl Guides Anthem. I did not know at the time that Girl Guides had an anthem.

    I began to sing the melody by melodic solfege and it did seem interesting enough to make a good song for a steelpan arrangement. I was able to get a scan of the score that he had for when I was ready to start working on the song.

 

SPECIAL FINDINGS

** Saturday 27 January 2024 **

    I knew that the words from the score John gave me was missing. I went to Google and started doing my research for this piece. I was lucky to find two scores for the same melody on a webpage. There was one in English and the other in English and French.

    The French lyrics required a quaver on the third beat in some measures to end the remaining syllable from words. There were also a few more syllables in the English text. Thankfully both scores provided chord symbols that were taken immediately into the Musescore file.

    Before the night was over, at my decision, I had the melody from the English version transcribed into the Musescore and took the chords.

THE STEELPAN ARRANGEMENT

** Sunday 04 February 2024 **

    Work for the steelpan music was done and completed today. It took a similar format as the majority of my arranged notations. A lot of research had to be done. I had to find out the name of the composer, the year that the song was done, the name of the lyricist and the composer of the melody. Fortunately, the two lead sheets found earlier provided some of that information. I wanted to see if Girl Guides might have known. I will have to see if I can find their email address to message them.

    However, the song does sound amazing. I feel very proud of it and hope that it will be useful to the Girls Guides in the future. There was a big challenge with the introduction and the ending as usual since many recordings did not have them. I discovered a beautiful piano-accompanied version on YouTube but refused to take things from it to avoid plagiarism.

EMAILING GIRL GUIDES.

** Thursday 08 February 2024 **

    Tonight, I found an email to the Girl Guides Commissioner and another from the Website. I got the email address for Girl Guides in Trinidad and Tobago. But the homeland email address unexpectedly ended up bouncing. I'm not sure if the address provided on their website was no longer in service. There was a nice electronic response saying that the email was received. I hope that in time a response will be given.

 

GIRL GUIDES LOGO.

** Friday 08 March 2024 **

    I was planning to upload the YouTube video for the music that I did on the song. I would need an image of the Girl Guides Logo but after my previous sets of research, it seemed like when a certain country took Girl Guides, they had a certain twist to the logo.

    The Girl Guides logo would be taken and arranged to suit the country’s Coat of Arms or could be embellished to look different from other countries.

    I decided that the Logo from the United Kingdom’s page would be best suited since it came from there. However, there were many versions some with better quality of colour than others on the internet. I took one with a black background and one with a white background.

    I thought that the white background logo should go first and match the white with the rest of my videos and the black could be used after in the video either just before the score appears or towards the conclusion. There was a third logo I found with the first making in turquoise but the image was too blurry. I kept it but did not use it.

 

GIRL GUIDES ANTHEM – YOUTUBE VIDEO.

** Sunday 10 March 2024 **

    Today was a painful and emotional day. I waited for the night to come to upload the anthem to YouTube. No email or response was sent and it resulted in me having to go ahead without approval or any feedback based on what was shared.

    Three attempts to record the video were made. One video upload was done but it was deleted because the information I was looking for was right in front of me the entire time (see Webpage link). With the new addition of information to the score, the music had to be recorded a fourth time and then edited a third time.

    That time I knew that the anthem was finished and ready. I was able to find out that the anthem’s melody came from an existing composition by Jean Sibelius. The name of the piece was “Partiolaisten Marssiquot” (March of the Scouts); Opus 91b. There was a piano and a choral version of the song on YouTube.

    I learned that the song in its arranged version was approved by Girl Guides in 1950 to be their anthem. This was the year I took to be the year of composition for the anthem on the score.

St. George’s College (Week #27) – Day #119

Dear Diary,

    There were no Georgians today. Heavy rain was pouring down. I didn’t want to go to school this morning. The road outside was already pooled up and passing cars splashed water around. I was late but I still got to 1M with my bags. I corrected the homework and taught the lesson within the time. Miss Roberts called me and said that she was not coming and overslept. I had already known that she wouldn’t show up.

    After class with 1M, Miss Roberts’ 2M class came down to the music room. Obviously, she had no plan and she liked to preach about it. I sat down with the students and asked them to tell me about all the topics that she gave them. I had plans to teach dotted notes and dotted rest but seeing that they did not do rests, I chose rests instead. They were given a picture of the chart with dotted notes and dotted rests.

    After recess, was the 3F class that she did not come to teach. I waited a while for them outside in the cold corridor outside of the ‘music room’ and saw them coming. I did not feel to teach them anything new that day. I did have a very adventurous idea to teach them part of my steelpan arrangement for the college song. I got the remainder of the book that I had from my desk in the office.

    The students were able to learn the first two systems by the end of the time I called an end to the class. We had about six minutes before the lunch bell went. I also invited the students to my YouTube channel to gain access to the recording of the arrangement that I did. They were very amazed at it.

    During lunchtime, I took some napkins from my desk down in the admin office and cleaned up one in the ‘music room’ to use. She had never found or made a place for me to sit down and work in there. It was shiny and clean, and I got a place to rest my charts on it. A lot of the 1F students were around. I sat down and worked on two in-class activities for my beaming lesson plan and another for my accidental lesson plan.

    I had given Miss Mary a good ‘migrating’. We had a good laugh over it. I got a ride from Miss Louis and have to prepare to share the Mark Book tomorrow if possible.

Funeral Service for Rev. Anthony Rampersad

Dear Diary,

    Today was the service for Reverend Anthony Rampersad who past away on Tuesday evening. I was ready by eight and as soon as I was about to put on my shoes Mr. Sharma called me and said he was heading up my road to get me. Everyone playing in the band had assembled in our church compound at Aramalaya to go down.

    It seemed as if many of us including myself were going down to Susamachar Presbyterian Church for the first time. I sat in the front seat with sir and everyone else drove in the back through the back road from Pasea to the highway and down into San Fernando. The ride was a long one but it was nice to see San Fernando. It was a long while since I went there for the South Family Boxing Day lime. Many things I learned on that trip.

    Pulling up into the yard, I was glad that nervous and did not pull in me so much. I knew it was a different church we were going to. As we walked into the sanctuary, I was amazed at the architecture and craftwork. Throughout the service, the environment felt very special. I knew I was finally in a church for once. I had a lot of difficulties trying to stay awake. Even on the ride coming down, I had more fighting to do.

    The band was gathered to have a short practice of the two pieces on the Susamachar steelpan instruments before the practice. It was only our band from Aramalaya playing for the service. I learned that the instruments have been there since 1994 in the church and were crafted by Mr. Bertrand Kellman. I took a look to see what the seven bass pan looked like but only by glance because we had to leave quickly.

    We were told that some of them were slightly different and that we would need time to adjust. I had to switch the bore tenor pan on the end with a regular one but the sound was better, although the strings for the stand caused the barrel to be twisted to the left too much.

    The two songs played for the service were “The Prayer” arranged by Zara and “Oceans” that I had arranged. A second run of both songs was done when a Mr. Bally came. The ending was nailed well in the practice for “Oceans”. Sadly, “The Prayer” was not recorded in the YouTube video at the start and there was an interruption in the “Oceans” causing the complex ending to collapse on itself.

    Form 6 students from Hillview in their formal wear led the processional with Hillview’s flag, while the National Presbyterian Choir sang “Be Still My Soul” from a highly inclined seating arrangement. The choice of tempo was very nice and the execution by the vocalists. I loved the echo in the church.

    At the end of the service, I had covered back the tenor pans. It reminded me of my Form 5 days in Hillview when the school found the coverings they had for their steelpans. I took some time looking at the manuscript paper with music on it and sang solfege in fixed doh (in F major). I left my phone in the car and could not take a picture of it.

    Just before leaving San Fernando (at 3:02 pm), we stopped by a barbeque place and the sun was barbequing us too. I got home and finally sat on the couch some minutes after four. The phone was buzzing with some of the events for the day. I took the recordings made by parents and others to make a separate video.

Funeral Service for Nigel & Nerkyle Mootoo

Dear Diary,

    Today was the service for Nigel and Nerkyle Mootoo. The Church’s steelband was asked to play. There were two pieces done: “The Prayer” by Zara and “Oceans” by me. The service began later than two in the evening. Today was also the first time we tried to play the piece after it was amended in the summer earlier this year. I knew that the ending of “Oceans” was difficult but it went well. That was played for the recessional.

    I had a long wait afterwards waiting for daddy to come. Some of us were waiting in the breeze under Morton House facing the road. We had never seen music trucks at a funeral before. Shortly after the two hurses exited the compound. A lot of music trucks lined up the street and followed in the same direction.

Aramalaya’s Christmas Play (2022)

Dear Diary,

    This morning I had an early start to get to church. We had to be there for 7:15 and the rest of the steelband members were there practising. I felt a bit ashamed because they were practising and making mistakes in front of everyone.

    I had no idea that the service would have started faster than I thought. The time went by really quickly. Mr. Sharma was not there for the entire service so I had to count in the band on both occasions for the procession and for “Away in a Manger” during the play. The “Away in A Manger” was one of my arrangements. The procession was a medley of “Little Drummer Boy” and “Oh Come Emmanuel” that Mr. Sharma did.

    I was grateful that the service went out very well. It concluded in a short space of time. My favourite part of the play was the short video they played describing Adam and Eve in the garden. We had another practice right after the service when I met Miss Linda. There was an evening function early next year that the church wanted us to play for. The song of choice for that particular function is “The Prayer” which was arranged by Zara.

Father's Day Service (2022)

Dear Diary,

    The Sunday School had to play steelpan after the sermon. The song for this service was "He's Got The Whole World" and it was arranged by Mr. Sharma. Unfortunately, he could not make it to the service. I had to count them in. Aria was on the bass and Elder Mr. Bharat on the drums. 

    One very funny thing about the rehearsal before the service, er did the song twice and then everyone they started the service immediately. I was not sure if that time had gone by really fast or if they thought that we were to play and then the service would start. 

    The sermon was done by Pastor Dr. Clive Dottin. Too much hurt came to me that day in church. The performance was not video recorded by anyone so there aren't any attachments to this entry.

Dear Diary,

    Today a wonderful service took place in the afternoon. I learned that Tobago started a Presbyterian group and their region had joined it with us in the North. Many nice pieces of music were sung during the service and two of them were taken to be arranged for steelpan by myself.

    The steelband had to perform for the processional. Our piece of practice for the event was “Blessed By Your Name” arranged by myself and this was our first time playing as a band for the year in church after the COVID-19 lockdown.

RAAG BHIMPALASI.

    This was the first class of being experienced in the piece called Raag Bhimplasi. The chorus and the verse were given and it seemed to be quite catchy and attractive. We were given all of the music to learn because I had all of the music written out by the second version. The piece was used at the Music of the Diaspora concert.

Aramalaya Choir Concert

Dear Diary,

    This afternoon I dressed myself up in my long-sleeve white shirt and black pants as I had to go to church to play steelpan with the Sunday School children. 

    They had to perform at a choir concert. The two pieces we were “Jesus Loves the Little Children” & "Hallu" by Mr. Sharma and “Ode to Joy” and "Jesus Loves Me" I did. 

   I got the music to what I had to play on the Double Tenor. This was fun doing the Double Tenor for the first time but I prefer this more than the Double Seconds. Some slips were made during the performance but I had a lot of fun still.

Church Visit Performance

 Dear Diary,

    A few days ago, Mr. Lewis gave me a call and asked me if I was interested in performing for a concert that would be today after my church service and the Sunday School pan. The two pieces I had planned and scored out on my Musecore program to perform were “Hide Me Now” and “Open the Eyes of My Heart”.

    I ended up reaching a bit late because there was Sister Act 2 on Television and I really love that show. I bet I could do a lot of lines by heart. At the event, it was at the Good Shepard Anglican Church. It was the last performance for the morning and I also saw my friend Elizabeth from Mr. Lewis’ classes. It was a nice surprise to see her and her mom there since they don't come by to class that much. 

    The performance went well or alright I suppose. To me it felt like some of the people didn’t really care what I was doing and ignored me but oh well. I just continued to play the two pieces as best as I could. It’s simply a time to play two songs on my Tenor pan and then exit. That's all.

    When my playing was over, someone else took the microphone and then they went to talk. I took the pan out of the hall and went in the road to hand it to daddy in part to put in the car. Then Mr. Goodridge called me out before leaving and gave us some food to carry and an envelope. I thanked them for the experience and the food. Daddy and I left shortly after. I got back to Curepe at House One.

Yesterday

 Dear Diary,

    Today I got back home and before 1 o'clock, I sat down at the computer and wrote out the sheet music for the song “Yesterday” music in a Full Score. I got it for the five voices that were to produce the sound of a pan. Usually, I use to write these pieces of music in voice but now I changed my mind and use the pan because it gives such a beautiful song rather than listening to the proper voices and having to listen to the harmony clashing against each other like a bunch of ghosts. 

    I decided to write this because in the WhatsApp chat “We are artist” Nella was talking about the song “Yesterday” so I photocopied the song from a songbook I had a long time now ago I made one for her, myself and also for the Music Journal. I wanted to write something for it so I just sat down and did the same thing like I did for the National Anthem but only for steelpan. 

    Surprisingly, the arrangement came out just fine. The introduction may have been a challenge but thankfully my mind was able to provide something to me.

    Today in the afternoon while I was preparing for my Principles of Business examination, Starry came and she gave me a small little pan book that she got from an exhibition. It looked quite lovely in red. I know that it will be a very nice one to add to my collection and that someday if I get a bigger library shelf, I would place it there with my other collection of work.

World Breastfeeding Week (2013) - TIBS Walk

Dear Diary,

    Today was the Annual World Breastfeeding Week in Trinidad of Port-of-Spain. I was the first person on the agenda because I had to start the walk. Mrs. Hassanali was there and she took out a picture with mom and me. Aunty Jereline from BTOFF came to march around the Savannah with the other walkers. 

    Along the way, they took off and left me behind. I didn't rush the walk like in previous years. I got back later than the rest of the walkers at the Girls' Guide Headquarters.

    During breakfast, mom had to perform her monologue. I guess the show was a hit because of how mom and I were there to perform unlike in Tobago. They didn’t get that and it was our seventh year. And seven was the perfect year.

Father's Day (2013)

Dear Diary,

    Today was Father’s Day in Trinidad and Tobago. I had to play with the Youth Group on the pan. Not many of us are in the pan group. Just about four to five people. WE had to go and play “Oh my Papa.” Then the Golden Years came up to play for the rest of the service. I wanted to play with them because I only needed to get the music. Their music sounded easy enough to sight-read on the spot.

    I was truly impressed because I didn’t know that they could read music like me too. And they were led by Zara for each of their presentations. Nice music filled the church. 

    At the end of the church service when I went to pack up my pan, I was looking into their music folders and there were only letters written in them. Then I realized that they didn’t know how to read music. But I didn’t blame them. I still appreciated their playing. 

    Later, Vijay and his son came up to Tunapuna to Visit Papa for a short period. They left just before Andrew and Dad came up to visit.

Walking to TIPICA

Dear Diary,

    Today I was trying to finish painting a piece I had to do for Miss Tappin during a free period in the sixth and seventh periods of the evening. She even made us write a Journal entry in our books about the observations made. I'm glad she said that mine was very well done.

    At the end of school, the Steel Ensemble gathered to walk down to (TIPICA) Pan Yard on El Dorado Road. When we got to the gates, they were closed and the caretaker had refused to open them for us to come in. The sun was so hot and we decided to walk back up to school and wait on Miss Richardson. Both Ifeaye and I tried calling her on a cell phone but no answer.

    Then this man came running up to us and allowed us to go in. The reason they didn’t let us in was that Miss Richardson had to be present for them to open the gate for us. The caretaker didn’t want to open the gate. Finally, miss had arrived late. Very late. Then we were allowed to go in.

    She got us some pans we were using in school and then practice continued as usual. We practised some scales and then we ran through Bluesette, Human Nature and 21 Guns. While practising, I saw mom, dad, the caretaker and the owner watching me in a kind of stare down way like if I did them something but not in a vexed manner. 

    Soon after, the practice was over and so too was the experience. That was a good practice today somewhat but I enjoyed the feeling of having to do a class rehearsal in a panyard. Maybe we might never make it to Schools' Panorama after all. Unfortunately, no photographs were saved for this particular entry.

Pan Minors & Steelpan Excitement

Dear Diary,

    Today I was excited because I was going back to the University of the West Indies to the Department of Festival and Creative Arts (DCFA) again. The better part of this was that I always see this place going from Curepe to Tunapuna and back, and always wanted to go there because of the Music. Miss Saunders had given every member of the Steel Ensemble in Hillview Application Forms to attend this workshop.

    I do hope that I learn a lot from these classes because it was Grade 1 and the same ABRSM Grade 1 I knew so well. It was also the opportunity for me to actually sit with a steelpan instructor and observe what it was like to POSSIBLY be taught steelpan for the first time. It was easy. I enjoyed getting everything correct in both theory classes for the first class today. 

    The teacher taught us to clap rhythms while keeping the beat on our feet. In the rhythms, we were asked to say the syllables of the claps (Do, Do-Dey, Do-ta-dey-ta, Do-ta-dey, Do-ou etc.) 

    At the end of class, we were sent out of Studio 4 to Pan studio. The teacher did exercises of rhythms. She had everyone do the same rhythm but had the pans use the notes of the C Major tonic triad. The teacher placed me to play the Double Seconds so I had to play E. The moment I looked down into that pan, uh... Headache! More rhythmic exercises were done and that was it for the second hour of the day.

    Aunty Zida came for me at the end of class. I went up the hill with my Grade 1 ABRSM Workbook they gave us and my pencil and work out every single question in the book. I know sure I would have probably gotten in trouble but I seriously couldn't help see the book with empty questions and not do them. It was a fun five hours spent with the book until the last page of it was done.

Pan Minors Level 1 - (Written Assessment 1)

Dear Diary,

    Today was my first assessment examination for the Pan Minors course, in Studio 4 at the University of the West Indies, DCFA. For the first hour, my class group's turn was for the Pan Theatre. Ms. Mostley conducted the practical aspect of the exam. I did my sight-reading and rhythmic exercises on the Double Seconds. Fuss I did not like the instrument at all but it is what they had put me to do.

    Once eleven came we were sent over to Studio 4, where we'd do the written theory exam. Ms. Brown had played a few pieces with melody and rhythmic patterns on the piano and we had to answer questions on the paper-based on what she played. Those were the first six questions. The rest of the paper was left for us to finish in the remaining minutes of the class. I wasn’t nervous at all but excited. 

(Update)

    In the second week of the programme, Ms. Brown returned the exam papers to us. I was surprised at the mistakes I made but that’s alright. I was really hoping to get all right and that might have been me alone in the class group to do so. She told us that only one student in the other group got total. 

    I can recall a big challenge remembering which lines that semibreve and minim rests were supposed to be written on. This was the only hard part of the written paper.

World Breastfeeding Week (2011) - BTOFF

Dear Diary,

    Today was the closing ceremony for the World Breastfeeding Week done by (BOFFI) Breastmilk the Official First Food. This was in the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), where I had to play the National Anthem on the pan and mommy had to perform her Perriot Grenada monologue as the Official Mascot of Mount Hope Women’s Hospital.

World Breastfeeding Week (2011) - TIBS

Dear Diary,

    I had a very happy day when I carried my Tenor pan down to the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. I had to play the National Anthem in my yellow T-shirt at the beginning of the annual breastfeeding walk for TIBS.

    After the walk, mommy had to do her performance while everyone else was sitting down under the tents at Girls' Guide Headquarters eating their breakfast. I had to help mom do sign language because this year’s theme was “Talk to me! Breastfeeding a 3D Experience.”

    The food every year always taste great. I won a prize when they called out numbers from the tickets they keep. It was a hamper with flour and other cooking things.
