This morning I
had some time to wait at home. I got up earlier than usual because I was so
excited to get to DCFA. It’s been a long time since I left the school (Friday
13th March 2019) on the day of the first recorded case of COVID-19
in Trinidad. Getting to the Cheeseman Building Iwas mistaken for a worker. They asked me to
help them carry in some cases of water. (The time of arrival is the time written below along with the time of departure from the compound.)
Only one lady was
there and I saw Mr Sharma coming down the steps soon after. We were both given
the attendance to sign. I thought it would have been a big, long-form it was a simple
row. They took us to Lecture Room 3 and we helped them step up the classroom
area. There was a long wait to start due to technical difficulties. Some familiar
faces were there. I was surprised that the cell phone I got during my Degree
still remembered the Wi-Fi.
Mr Sharma did
the first half of the conference which was grading the conference. We learned
that grading the students’ composition too high or too low can get a teacher
kicked out of the CXC system and they would have to go through an interview
with the Curriculum Officer or some other official concerning the marks. Everyone
was split into different groups and had to assess a composition. I think some
of them were done by Mr Sharma. We had to look at some criteria. Some of the
groups were giving some shocking low marks but we understood once we saw the
score.
A recess was
given after Mr. Sharma’s half of the presentation was completed. I met John
from Tunapuna, and I also met Andrea from TIPICA in the restroom area. Andrea
and I went upstairs because the toilets were not working. Strange. I used to
use the restroom upstairs because of the overpopulation below.
The second half
of the conference dealt with timetabling. For this part of the session, I was
sitting in the very last row of the Lecture Room, and John was sitting next to
me with Mr Barry. Surprising to see Miss Roberts decide to sit in the same chair
from earlier, lol.
The lady was extremely
good. I think I would have liked her as a teacher in my lifetime. She seemed
like a real teacher. She drew a flat triangle connecting the four words History
to the top, Theory below, Practical to the right, and SBA to the left. My hand
was very tired from rushing down all of the notes that the lady was speaking. I felt
like the back row was better so no one would see all the notes I was writing
down like mad. There were seven pages in total.
In the end, it
took me a while to leave. A lot of the audience left the compound quickly. I met
Mr Roger after a while. I didn’t see Mr Reed or Mr Sheldon in the Festival
Library. I met some of my older friends Melissa, Isiah, Marsha and Marissa.
They left, and I remained in the corridor. I sat there waiting for Daddy to come
and tried to work out rhythm exercises for conducting my Form 2s. It was a
blessing. I thanked Miss Paul again after returning home that evening after
Bible study.

Dear Diary,
The dance department at DCFA had
their “Festival of Movement” concert. It was a two-day event from seven in the
night. Everything was done twice on both nights. The Indian Classical Ensemble
was supposed to perform our piece of “Aigiri Nandini” but I saw on the program
that they had labeled the piece as “Ardhannarishvara”.
Only on Saturday night, I was
able to go into one of the dance studios to see them dance to the composition I
had done called “Dance of Nature”. In one of the dance rehearsals, I got to
meet Ms. Paul who was the teacher for the class I did the music for. She had
realized who I was when I gave her a copy of the “Aigiri Nandini” that I had
done for the Ensemble. Also, another group I am playing music with for another
of her classes. We were given an extra assignment as an option to write
something for the dancers and I did it. Since I was the only person to complete
the full song, it was taken immediately. There was one student attempting music
for the earth dance.
The coordinator Mrs. Olivier did
not want us to enter. I snuck in to hear the music of my own composition
that night. I was not pleased with the ‘collage’ effect they did with recorded
dances. It felt like all the hard work was in vain because I had sat down and
calculated each step. The others in the Indian Classical Ensemble found the
crowd took forever to enter the room so they left and went back downstairs
before I got in.
In composition class, Mr. Sharma
would have said almost the same when he asked me how I found it to be. I was
congratulated by Mr. Reid when he met me in school in the week leading up to
the event. He said he had heard the composition I did. As I chose to ignore the
visual and look down to the ground, I took in the sound. For me, it sounded
like there was too much bowl gong in use. I did some adjustments to the piece
over some time. This was a good experience hearing the piece on a loudspeaker
for the first time.
The Indian classical ensemble
performance was done after the Intermission. I met Mr. Sharma and Miss Karen on
Saturday night after entering the dance studio and some of the others from the
composition. Our performance was done first after the intermission. It did
sound a bit weird as Miss Priyanka was telling Miss Paul after the first night.
I agreed. The rest of the show went well on both nights. Mr. Maharaj was not
there. I think he was out of the country for that weekend.

Dear
Diary,
I
had been looking forward to this course for several semesters since my first
year of the certificate program. It was finally here and I happily took my
first-row seat as usual. There were several pieces of homework to be done as
assignments for marks and a lot of other activities that had made this semester
SUPER interesting.
The
first assignment was presented in class tonight. We were asked to find a
partner and play one of their ideas for the class. The person I teamed up with
was Tinesha. We got a tenor pan to the empty Pan Theatre to try out the ideas.
Hers was simple to sight-read out but she seemed surprised when I got them
correct.
When
I gave her some of mine, she couldn’t manage so in class I ended up playing all
the ideas instead. It took a lot of time to go through the assignment. I might
say the whole class when feedback had to be given too. I apologize for the
condition of the document. It was chipped up into pieces to save on paper to archive.
We were asked to develop at least one idea (from assignment 1) and one of his partner’s ideas. Instead, I took one of my idea for assignment one and created another of my own.
It was very late in the night before class was over. I was not that well. Mr. Sharma and two other students tried the piece out when I could not make it to play it. It seemed as if the assignment itself was not good enough. My idea was to make something simple. I was thinking of a preliminary piece that might be done for an exam. In the portfolio will be a further discussion on this failed attempt.
I took about four days doing over something from scratch to meet the requirements of assignments two and three to use it as required in assignment four. I was able to make an introduction, the first section, and a second section.
Section C was not ready because the time was spent/expired and the class was about to begin. That night, only Mr. Sharma, Brandon, Milano, and I were there in class. Not many were present. Everyone else was not there. They seemed to appreciate and support the long runs in the song. Mr. Sharma supported the piano part and commented on the 'slim' use of writing in it to "make it real easy". This gave me the confidence to continue with the rest of the piece.
This piece was presented to the class on another date later in the semester. At that time the entire class was present. I was able to get some comments from Anton mentioning the key changes and the pauses at the end of a section. He compared this piece to the "Dance of Nature" piece for the same comment. It seemed as if all the runs in the piece had made everyone speechless? No one else commented again.

ASSIGNMENT #5: MUSIC WITH TEXT – “LOVE IS
ALL I NEED”.
* Thursday 17 October 2019 *
**pick of score
There
was an assignment that asked us to use a poem and create music for it. During the
summer vacation that went, it was a Friday evening after the second ‘Law and
Gov’ class that I heard to sound of a different lady singing in my mind. The
music given to me was Rehearsal Section A. I did not have a manuscript paper
with me in the car, so I took a copybook and wrote out the lyrics before typing
to figure out the correct rhythm. I had a lot of hard trials trying to connect
back with that lady in my mind for the rest of the music. It was not so easy.
I
did not know what Ella Fitzgerald looked like in real but the sound of the lady
in the light silk blue coat sounded like her standing on the club’s stage. The
setting for me seeing the woman was in a dark club with a music band. I
could not see the woman’s face but from the five seconds I got from hearing
Ella’s voice on YouTube, it matched. It seemed scary but I continued to see if
I could get help.
My
experience playing the piece in class was a silent one. I did not have many
words. I was hoping that Anton would have been able to teach me something. Mr.
Sharma had met up with me after a thesis meeting on a Friday evening to help me
change measures 78-79. I added it to my journal and did the entry for it.

ASSIGNMENT #6: “DANCE OF NATURE”.
* Unknown/Forgotten Date *
Mr. Sharma told us about a collaboration composition that the DCFA dance department wanted to do with the composition class. He began to explain that the dance was divided into three sections to represent the elements of Earth, Water, and Fire. We were allowed to work in groups of three doing one element each or to attempt composing the entire piece individually.
Just by the options being given to us, I knew immediately a group attempt would not work. I knew if I had to come up with this composition (or if I chose to), I had to do it all on my own and work out the obstacles. Because it was now a piece of music to be done for a dance. I was not sure if the dance was a group performance or a solo.
Some weeks after, some of us in the class were introduced to Ms. Paul who was the teacher for the dance group for this composition project. This was the first time experience for me where music and dance were done. She had three ladies in the dance studio. Each one of them did an individual element. Some of the class students were recording the dances. I took the time to look at the dancers one after the other and special attention to Ms. Paul when she counted in the dancers and the instructions or corrections to the dancers.
There was a dark and rainy Sunday after coming back from steelpan practice at church, I began working on the composition. I could not rely on anything but what came to my mind and my own discoveries in composing. After three and a half hours of starting, I had thirteen instruments in use. This work continued for some more time, about less than three weeks. After completing the water, I had a medical challenge that became worst and I had to go to the doctor. I could not walk well for two weeks but had to force the pain in school for those weeks.
Sometime after I was better, I was able to complete the piece. I went to Isa to get two copies of the full score. One was for Mr. Sharma and the other was mine to keep for personal archives. We had a short hour meeting in the office to review the composition with Sir. He had the composition played on the loudspeakers in the office and told me that there is a big difference between hearing the music from the computer and in a large area. The music was then emailed as an MP3 to Mr. Sharma and he sent it off to Ms. Paul since she had already left for the day.
The piece was also presented in class by Mr. Sharma on the next class we all had to meet. Something about the composition happened but it was fixed and ready for the dancers to use. We had the idea to have the composition done as a live performance but it did not work out. I had all of the parts created and even an Indian music notation score for the sitar in case Mr. Maharaj was to join us. Challenge arose in the process of that score since the key changed so many times. Also, I had to face the occurrences of empty measures. I recalled Mr. Maharaj telling us in class that Indian music is not intended to have any rest for long in between. At some points notating rests was a challenge since sustained pitches also used a dashed line and different rhythmic patterns brought up several challenges.
The class listened and someone else from class had done music for the earth element. He had shared his creation two weeks before but the other two from his group didn't start. Mr. Sharma told us after playing my composition that he had decided to use my composition because the time was "getting close to the "Festival of Dance" concert and [it] was the only completed piece."
The Indian Classical Ensemble had to perform for the same concert on both nights (Friday and Saturday). Only on Saturday night, did I get to see the performance with the composition. It was not done exactly as expected. I saw that they had taken the MP3 and made a 'dance collage'.
The three elements were videotaped and then scrambled into pieces while the music ran in the recording. I felt cheated in a way because I had calculated each step that the dancers moved in the studio on the day of our in-class recording. Every turn, every move, every step or articulation done by the dancer was timed accordingly so that it would suit the dancers one after the next. In class the week after the concert Mr. Sharma shared a similar comment based on what he was expecting after asking me in front of the class how I found it was. I am still very grateful for the opportunity.
There were five different exercises given to use by Mr. Sharma and it was labeled as Extra Assignments on the UWI's My-E-Learning platform. He said that we could do all five to replace one of the assignments.
I personally did them all because I wanted to have the extra fun. However, it was a lot of hard work involved. I also needed to have a good strategy. I decided that since there were five different worksheets to complete for this assignment, I would complete one worksheet a week.
Each worksheet per week would be worked on each night on the piano. By each Saturday, the pieces would be reviewed in their entirety and then scored out on Musescore by the Sunday evening. I knew it would work and I felt very proud that all five worksheets were completed by the sixth week of class. Presentations for these worksheets could have been done in class at any time.

FINAL PORTFOLIO.
* Unknown/Forgotten Date *
At the end of the semester, a portfolio was required to be submitted. This project would be marked in place of a final examination. In the completion of the assignment, I was proud of all the accomplishments throughout this course.
My "Dance of Nature" composition was taken by the DCFA dancers for their "Festival of Dance" concert. I was also happy that I was able to break the page record in portfolios. Mr. Sharma said that the most amount of pages he had to grade was 80 pages. I presented 126 pages for marking. All pieces were introduced with a short description and a reflection.

Dear
Diary,
Mr.
Maharaj was the teacher for my individual harmonium class. I decided to follow
in the footsteps of Mrs. Neaves and Mrs. Ramlal, who were allowed to do
a new instrument in their final year.
My
chosen instrument was the harmonium because it was one that papa always wanted to
learn and it was an instrument I liked from small. Unfortunately, papa passed
in the same 2015 summer before I got into UWI but if he could see me, he would
be able to see what happens in the classes. Possible Monday Indian Classical
Ensemble too.
This
semester I was given a few pieces of music to do along with some alaankars
(exercises) of scales. I was asked by Mr. Maharaj which scales I would feel
comfortable playing so for a while guess, I chose C as the tonic for the scales.
I would have had to stop to pencil in the pitches to help me understand the
music throughout the classes until the next when I would score out the music
and include his Sargam for both of us to understand it.
HARMONIUM ALAANKARS.
* Unknown Date *
There
were three exercises given to me to practice very early at the beginning of the
individual harmonium classes. Since C was my scale of choice, that would be the
tonic for all three. They were like technical patterns from the steelpan book I
had to use from Mr. Sharma’s class.
I
had no need to amend these scores. The moment Sir gave me two or three measures
of the exercises, I knew what I had to write out. They followed the same thing
we had to do in Monday night class but just different patterns now.
This
was the first piece of the semester to be given to study. I was shocked when
Mr. Maharaj picked a piece using one of the three most difficult scales of
Bhatkhande’s ten thaats (scales). I still went along because I wanted to learn
as much as he could teach me and I felt strongly that I might never find
another teacher to guide me on this path of music. There was no need for
amendments. It was
This
piece also did not need amending. It was used the same way it is for
assessment. There was not much difficulty with it. I needed some time to get
accustomed to the finer placements on the keys of the instruments. I was still
wondering how come sir was going on the harder scales with me. On the other
hand, I still appreciated it.
This
one required a few amendments. We had missed some classes in
between. There was one class. The date inserted above for this piece was the date
when Mr. Maharaj had given me the entire song straight. I did not mind at all.
I wished all the classes were like that so I could transcribe them when I got
home. This piece was used for the end-of-term recital also.
This piece took only two sessions to complete by both transcription and playing. At the end of the second session, Mr. Maharaj suggested the way the piece should end. This piece was also played at the Indian Classical Recital at the end of the semester.
The video recording was recorded on Saturday 6th August 2022 and became a DAPHA Project.

This was the first class of being experienced in the piece called Raag
Bhimplasi. The chorus and the verse were given and it seemed to be quite catchy
and attractive. We were given all of the music to learn because I had all of
the music written out by the second version. The piece was used at the Music of the Diaspora concert.

Dear
Diary,
I was asked by a friend Elizabeth to recreate an image for her. She had shown me from a notebook something
close to what she wanted. She said that she wanted to use it for a tattoo. This
drawing was completed as a DAPHA Project on the entry date written above.
I’m very pleased that the drawing was found
satisfactory. I am not sure if the plan/idea of the drawing was ever
used.

[WRITTEN AS REPORT]
Dear Diary,
In this entry, I list my works for the Music Literatures of the steelpan course materials. They are to assist the students in completing their assignments and to assist in making the course more student-friendly. Below is an account of all the work that was done by myself (as part of the DAPHA Project) for the course.
The 1st versions of both forms were done to do my assignments. I really wanted to do over the kind that Dr. Remy sent by email. The book report form is usually used for assignments 2 and 3. The newspaper clipping form is used at the archives and for the microfilm assignment. (Thursday 11th October 2018)
For the 2nd version, I decided to add watermarks. Dr. Remy and I were excited to use them and see how they turned out. Unfortunately, after a semester of putting it into the trial, there was some difficulty set with the watermark being too bold on the paper. (2019)
In the 3rd Version, all the watermarks were taken out. The header was amended in both forms. The book report form was changed on pages two and three. I designed page three to be duplicated for how many pages the student needed. The newspaper report form was an adoption of the "A Season of Steelpan" form version.
I'm not sure how useful this was for Dr. Remy and her new batch of students for that particular academic year. Unfortunately for me, Microsoft Word observed several technical challenges and destroyed my work for the "A Season of Steelpan" series book. I was still proud of this version for the students. It seemed more professional and 'official' in a way. (2020)

During the vacation period (year 2, semester 1) of the Music Degree, as I was cutting through some newspapers for more steelpan Articles, I thought that there should also be proper techniques to share with the students and show them that when they cut paper how it came to be destroyed easy in future in the library either by age or by audience usage. I did separate PowerPoints to emphasize certain types of article clippings.
In the course, there were eight pages containing a list of names of steelbands. I was able to take that list and condense it into three pages. I thought of the Steelpan Arranging 1 course I did with Dr. Remy's degree and thought that it would have been more helpful to the students with just three pages.

MLA Handouts.
* Monday 18th February 2019 *
I was in the Festival Library at DCFA and then I received a message. It was a message from Dr. Remy saying that she had to speak with me. When I knew she was in school, I shut back down the laptop and went upstairs to Cheeseman Building to visit her. I did not know what it was.
When I got there, she told me that the students in the class (Music Literature of the Steelpan) were having trouble doing the MLA. They had just updated MLA citation to version eight. She took out a page with writing and boxes and showed me what she had planned. Just by looking at the paper, I realized that Dr. Remy was asking me to help her make a handout to teach the students how to do the MLA. This is what she continued to tell me and she said that the students were getting a lot of trouble trying to do the citation.
I took the page she gave me and did the work overnight. The next day, I went back to visit her in the office to submit the work. I showed Dr. Remy the handout she wanted me to make. In addition, there was a second one I had made for her where I did a sample of the assignment’s form filled out with the newspaper article done.

Dear
Diary,
During the summer vacation of my degree year one, I was sent an email from
Dr. Remy for a request. She had asked me to go to the West Indian Collections Microfilm to find a steelpan article for a colleague. The name of the Article is
"The
Story of Steelbands in Antigua: From 'Hellish Cacophony' to Festival” which was
written by David J. Nelson of the Guardian Newspaper in 1951.
MLA:
Nelson,
David J. "The Story of Steelbands in Antigua: From 'Hellish
Cacophony' to Festival.” Sunday Guardian, 26 Jan, 1951, p. 17.
I emailed back Dr. Remy on the 9th of June 2018 with the
article in a PDF from the Microfilm program along with some other steelpan
items I was able to find. According to the email, the same article that was
asked of me to find is on page three. Dr. Remy also wanted to send her the MLA
written out for her before passing the information on to someone else. I did up
a handwritten form (version 6) that I used to do for the coursework in that class and sent
it over to her together. The MLA attempt on the form was not correct. Please see the table above.
[UPDATE]
I have had a lot of appreciation for this little search because it got me
to be introduced to TASPO (Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra). I had to
learn further on this when I was doing her degree course in the ‘History and
Development of the Steelpan’ class. I was surprised when it came back up in the
class and I got to learn a bit further about what I found.
I got the opportunity to meet Miss Nero in the library at the same time.
She had asked Dr. Remy to meet me after my submissions of the “A Season of
Steelpan” books with newspaper articles and forms that I had donated to the
library towards Dr. Remy’s collection of work there. I also gave Miss Nero some
additional submissions from the Microfilm quest.
I went to find what Dr. Remy was looking for first and then went through
the whole year looking for steelpan articles from that same year. I also got to
share the music composition for the “Animal Farm” anthem that I did during that
vacation period as part of the conversation and she seemed to appreciate it.
Just before leaving, Miss Nero took me to see the Dr. Eric Williams
Museum where they had recreated his office. It felt like a real place or some completely
special different location as if it was not UWI anymore in the small room.

Dear
Diary,
Diaspora Concert is here again. For
me, it is now the Diaspora exam. The two-day examination asks for the most
unbelievable and tests you more than a student. This is the only I view it, personally.
For the event, I played music with two groups. Listed below are the groups and
the music they played.
INTERMEDIATE ENSEMBLE: [Permission was not granted.]
Redemption Song.
One Note
Samba.
Milap.
Hallelujah.
Sonata No. 14, Op.27, No.2.
Night Shift.
Full of Vibes.
I was not able to get a program for
the even but only the backstage directory. I can recall carrying three sets of
clothing to the event. I dressed up in my Indian wear for the beginning.
I
never like to change backstage with everyone before the program starts. I
feel comfortable changing at home in my Indian wear and then going down to Daaga. Usually,
the Indian Classical Ensemble is supposed to start the show and then there
would be performances from the Indian Classical class on Thursdays and then the
World Music group of the certificate program.

Dear
Diary,
The following entries below are an
account of the transcription and learning process of the pieces of music done
for the semester. All of these pieces (except for the Raag Jaunpuri) were then performed
at the Music of the Diaspora 'Concert'.
Friends Brandon and Eshay did not
return to the ensemble but a new girl named Kelsey became a friend of mind and music
was sent to her along with all other members who provided their email contact
to me.
The first piece of music that was
taught in the ensemble for the semester was a Bollywood piece called Churaliya.
My experience with the piece Raag Sohini had me too tired from all the various
versions of transcriptions done. I thought that I could save ink from the
printer if I wrote it out and then send it off as an email to the other
members.
A short playing of the piece was
done from YouTube and then we were asked to copy the Sargam from the whiteboard.
I truly enjoyed learning the beginning of the song. It was amazing learning out
the rest as the rest of the Mondays in the semester went by.
More students came to join us in
class. Mr. Maharaj gave us the first five scales one night and the second set on
the other one. I got him to pronounce the names of the scales so that they can
be written in the document. Some changes were made and these too were added
to the little handbook that I had put together.
Another Bollywood piece was prepared
by the entire ensemble. It was truly a very rhythmic piece. Only some months at
the end of the semester I decided to revise the score but did not get to do so.
It has not been done just yet. All of my transcriptions were deleted in the process
of saving them on a flash drive in 2021, at the end of completion of the degree.
Not much work was needed for it
thankfully. However, there were a lot of sections and fills that had to be done
for it.
Parts of two classes were used for
this piece. Unfortunately, not much attention was given to it and it was not
completed in class. There was space for it at the Diaspora 'Concert’ but it
seems like I will take what is given and create a piece out of it myself.
I could already see the whole
class did not care to learn the music and I knew there was no student beside myself who practised it. A night in the class came when Sir started to sing it
and I was able to play back half of the song. Sadly, I was held tightly behind
my neck and threatened to not continue by another student in silence. Took me
two days to get over that particular pain in my neck. Class for Mr. Sharma and Intermediate
was not good at experiencing it.
This was a piece that was revised
probably more than Raag Sohini. A lot of the class nights were taken on this
piece and then on the final two pieces. I feel this was the reason why Raag
Jaunpuri was not able to be done. We had a lot of students in the class and organising
who to play what was the next issue.
A Monday night late into the
semester, only Mr. Maharaj and I were early and waiting for seven. While we
were waiting, he spoke to me about music transcription. When he sat down by the
piano, he decided to start the music for me to start writing it out in Western style for the others to follow when they come.
I was lucky I had a manuscript
page in my folder. I got it out and listened to what he was playing. It was a
familiar song that I knew too. I had a good idea of the key and I was right when
I tried out the first measure and a piece. We had the whole piece down in
those thirty minutes and then class started with this. Sir took my manuscript
paper to the projector and we started with that song. Afterward, the rest of
the music was worked on. This piece too did not need a lot of amendments.
I was very proud of myself for
working out the music on the spot alone. A part of that night had another experience.
At one point during the music transcription session by ween Mr. Maharaj and me (second
part of the song), I saw an imaginary green board in a faded colour appear, and
white markings of the rhythms I needed were written out. It looked like white chalk
on a green chalkboard. It did not stay but moved from right to left as if it
was the headlines traveling on the bottom of the television screen during the
news. I've never encountered a remarkable experience like that before.
During the Semester, I was given
a score by my friend Karen. It was one that she had to earn for a course. She
told me that it was for a group assignment and someone had created this for
them. I had a feeling that I might have t do that course too. She was in her final
year and it was the music degree as well. The name of the piece was “Hai Apna
Dil”. I did not know the name but when I sight-sang the first two measures I
knew the melody right away.
