Dear Diary,
Today was the
second day of school. Monday was the General Elections, and the UNC won. It was
also timesheet day since today is the last day of the month. This was the first
thing that was taken care of as soon as I set my bags down in the staffroom.
When I got into the office, Miss Dayna greeted me. Some of the teachers caught
me making copies for them. Thankfully, when I went back, Patty had asked if I
was feeling better, and then she signed my timesheet and the resumption form. I
wrote my name on the clipboard and left it by the computer for Afisha. I went
to eat.
After this was
to head to the art room for the marking. Once I got there, Miss confirmed that
tonight at midnight was the deadline for the SBAs. When I saw this, I went back
for my laptop. I had to save the markbook as a 2025 document and begin plugging
in the data from the marksheets made by me into the digital markbook. Both of
us were at the table for the whole day. I didn't even realise that lunchtime had
come and gone when students were leaving. It was the end of school.
Daddy called at
5 PM to see if I could get out, but the way things were looking, we were gonna
have to stay the night in school. It was nice of Joshua to stop by and help us.
He eventually had to leave at minutes past 11 PM. Arielle and Nathaniel stayed
back with us until 10 PM, working on their SBA pieces. Their parents came for
them.
Around 9 PM, we
were getting a WhatsApp call from "Kimmy" on Mel's phone. She was
asking for marks that could be entered by the time. Only four students had
completed, so I sent her a picture of the final tallies from the markbook (the
page 2s). It was very cramping in my head to have to tell Miss that it still
had way too many students to go. We continued until some minutes after 10 PM,
when Patty and Kimmy called us in a group call. The two of them were trying to
help us. Patty said that she would be going to bed in the next few minutes.
By 11:42, Kimmy
called us back, and we still had a lot more marking to do. She had to stop
because the CXC site was sticking, and she said it was a final rush for other schools
too. Miss and I did whatever we could, and by 1:39 AM, we had finally left the
art room. I remained awake for another two hours, and at 3:39 AM, I
finally rested my body on the staffroom floor at the base of the desk and went to sleep.
I never imagined how cold or rock-hard the ground could have been. It was
harder than stone and colder than the fridge. Eventually, I fell asleep, and
that was another night working at St. George’s.
